Greetings! I am thrilled to announce the next installment of the opening ears concert series. On Saturday, October 18 will be welcoming Elango Kumaran (solo voice) and a trio of Nikita Manin from New York on Clarinet,
Bruce Ackley on saxophone, and
Ben Davis Cello.
I can’t say enough good things about these musicians so how about you, read about their music in their own words…
This unique instrumentation, soprano sax, Bb clarinet and cello, along with the trio's eclectic combination of musical personalities will come together for the first time on October 18. The intrepid improvisers are certain to discover surprising musical terrains as they explore sound and spontaneous structures together to delight curious listeners.
Bruce Ackley is a founding member of the renowned Rova quartet, having honed his craft on the straight horn over the past 5 decades of performance.
British cellist
Ben Davis moved to the Bay Area five years ago and has since been a founding member of the groups Insect Life, Murmur Garden and Chris Brown/
Ben Davis Duo.
Clarinetist Nikita Manin grew up studying with Ben Goldberg in the Bay and is now active in the NYC experimental music scene as an improviser, composer and performer.
Elango Kumaran likes singing and making weird noises. He studied Carnatic music (from South India) as a kid. He mostly prefers to make noises alone in his apartment, but he appreciates that other environments have their advantages (for instance, being able to sing loud, which is not acceptable in an apartment building).
As always, I will serve food and drinks, and all $ collected goes to the visiting artists.
Come expand your ears!
