Improviser
Kanoko Nishi-Smith accompanies her mother, acclaimed Japanese poet Hiromi Itō. Dubbed by poet Anne Waldman as "a true sister of the beats", Itō is one of Japan's most important and highly regarded poets. Described as a “shamaness of poetry,” Jerome Rothenberg noted her “relentlessly exuberant mind, situated somewhere between bliss and nightmare.” This unique mother-daughter duo, marrying arresting poetry to improvisation on the koto, will make for a memorable afternoon of poetry and music in the intimacy of a home concert.
