FREE! Brown Bag Jazz Hangs: Lewis Jordan — on Archie Shepp

Join us for casual daytime talks and listening sessions with leading lights of the Bay Area jazz community. Bring your own lunch or order ahead from the JazzCaffè. Wednesdays at lunchtime! Free, drop-ins welcome.

Our summer series is presented in collaboration with The Freight.

Bay Area saxophonist Lewis Jordan is a musician, poet, and educator. In his career, Jordan has focused on creative structures for improvisation, which has led to collaborations with artists from a range of disciplines. He has performed with dancers, poets, actors and musicians—including Brenda Wong Aoki, Jimmy Biala, Anthony Braxton, India Cooke, Lisle Ellis, Danny Glover, Karl Evangelista, Mark Izu, Jon Jang, Kash Killion, Genny Lim, James Newton, Donald Robinson, Cecil Taylor, and others. On his most recent CD Critical Mass, the words, the compositions, and the improvisation call for a spirit of resistance to outlived authority, whether external or internal. Jordan teaches critical thinking as a college professor, and leads a monthly series for improvised music at Temescal Arts Center in Oakland. For several decades, he has run the Music at Large series.
