Legend tells that the mythical Three-horned Brassiosaurus could muster over 300 decibels of fire-breathing sound. However, ear-protection is not needed for today's audiences; the post-Postmodern Brassiosaurus prefers to mutter and squeak just as much as roar. Nor is ritual blood-sacrifice neccessary to coax the beast into singing its sweetest songs; a simple offering of valve/slide oil will do. Expect music that evolves organically from a tiny, burbling embryo, hatches into skwawking, scratching honks, cannonades into explosions of melodious grunts, roaming freely the rocky territory between Scelsi, Stalling and Sousa, and finally expires in a fusillade of sighs.
Toyoji Tomita studied trombone at the Juilliard School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music, and studied the didjeridu with Stuart Dempster. In 1976 he won the First Prize in the Gaudeaumus International competition for Interpreters of Modern Music in Rotterdam, Holland. Living in Paris, France for the next three years, he toured Europe extensively both as a soloist and as a member of the Ensemble Musique Vivante, Diego Masson, director. He received an M.F.A. in electronic composition from Mills College in 1986. He is a co-founder of the Mills College Didjeridu Ensemble.
Ron Heglin is a trombonist and vocalist doing compositional and improvised music. He has studied at the Center For World Music, Ali Akbar Khan College, and Indian Vocal Music with Pandit Pran Nath. Mr. Heglin has performed in ensemble and solo throughout Europe and the United States.
Tom Djll studied music at Berklee School of Music, the Colorado College, the Creative Music Studio, and Mills College Center for Contemporary Music. His teachers include Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Karl Berger, Lester Bowie, Leo Smith, Pauline Oliveros, and I. Shibata Shihan. He is the recipient of an MFA from Mills College in Electronic Music as well as a Deeploma from the Deep Listening Organization, and was awarded the Paul Merrit Henry Prize for Composition while at Mills. Tom has been a part of the SF Bay improvising/new music scene since 1985, recording and playing with innumerable groups and combinations of players.
