Clairvoyant Records is proud to announce Patternalia, the new EP from composer, oboist, and electronic musician Kyle Bruckmann. A deeply considered work at the intersection of contemporary classical composition, experimental electronics, and cross-genre exploration, Patternalia marks a striking new direction in Bruckmann’s already formidable body of work.
Patternalia builds from gently pulsing synthesizer sequences, with Bruckmann's oboe and English horn weaving in and out with soloistic lines. The EP reflects a deliberate turn toward kosmische and ambient aesthetics, the results of a long re-evaluation of introspective minimalism and a soundworld Bruckmann associates with the planetarium, the aquarium, and the rugged landscapes of Northern California.
With a creative output of more than 100 albums extending from his conservatory-trained foundations into gray areas encompassing free jazz, post-punk rock, and the noise underground, Bruckmann’s inspiration for Patternalia includes the techniques and tropes of early electronic music, as well as a desire for “gentleness”:
“A couple years ago, I noticed that my typical listening habits had essentially split into either blasting bludgeoning doom and techno alone in the car, or quietly spinning Wandelweiser/ambient/post-Feldman minimalism while making breakfast before the family was awake. And then I realized that even with all the ostensibly 'minimal' music I've made over the years, I'd never succeeded in making anything that was truly... gentle, that would ever qualify for my own dedicated 'breakfast music' shelf."
