On August 22 at 8:00pm, Tom's Place presents
Kra Pao 6
(
Kyle Bruckmann -- oboe, engish horn
Thomas Dimuzio -- synthesizer
Philip Gelb -- shakuhachi, Buchla Music Easel
Motoko Honda -- piano
Fred Lonberg-Holm -- cello
Kanoko Nishi -- koto)
Kra Pao 6 is a new ensemble featuring texturally based improvisations from an all-star list of veteran Bay-Area performers:
Kyle Bruckmann (oboe, engish horn),
Thomas Dimuzio (synthesizer),
Philip Gelb (shakuhachi, Buchla Music Easel),
Motoko Honda (piano), Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello), and Kanoko Nishi (koto).
The Goog's AI helpfully (if hedgingly) informs us that `"Kra Pao 6" likely refers to a musical ensemble featuring improvisational musicians. The name appears to be a play on the Thai dish "Pad Kra Pao," which is a stir-fry with basil, suggesting a blend of diverse elements into a unique sound.'
I was excited to hear Kra Pao 6 play at the West Oakland Sound Series earlier this year, so gladly accepted their proposal to play at Tom's Place.
Philip Gelb, who convenes the ensemble, is on the verge of heading to Southeast Asia for a few months, so this is your last chance to hear them until sometime
next year. It will be a night to remember.
