For Other Minds’s 30th anniversary, pianist Marc-André Hamelin will perform Charles Ives’s legendary Piano Sonata No. 2, “Concord, Mass. 1840-60,” with commentary by composer Kyle Gann, author of Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata: Essays after a Sonata (U. of Illinois Press, 2017).

Hosted by Charles Amirkhanian on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Littlefield Concert Hall on the Mills College campus in Oakland, CA. The performance will be preceded by a reception at 6:00 pm celebrating the 30th anniversary of Other Minds.

Trevor Dunn (contrabass) and Phillip Greenlief (woodwinds) celebrate the release Twenty Seven on Riverworm Records. The title of the new album reveals the years they have been playing together. Their work has always focused on spontaneous improvisation - a long-term conversation of imagination and the ingenuity of their approach to their respective instruments.

Sally Gates opens the show with the premiere of Thought and Terraform for solo guitar. ‘Thought & Terraform’ explores the hallucinatory nature of reality, deriving themes from surrealism, quantum physics, and science fiction. A work for solo guitar, these themes are developed and elaborated upon through improvisational passages.  More...

Vinny Golia's Heptacontakaiheptagon Ensemble
A special 77 pieces large Ensemble made up of some of the most adventurous musicians from the Bay Area and beyond will perform a debut composed and directed by award winning musician Vinny Golia!

As a composer Vinny Golia fuses the rich heritage of Jazz, contemporary classical and world music into his own unique compositions. Also a bandleader, Golia has presented his music to concert audiences in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the United States in ensembles varying dramatically in size and instrumentation. Mr. Golia has won numerous awards as a composer, including grants from The National Endowment of the Arts, The Lila Wallace Commissioning Program, The California Arts Council, Meet the Composer,Clausen Foundation of the Arts, Funds for U.S. Artists and the American Composers Forum. In 1982 he created the on-going 50 piece Vinny Golia Large Ensemble to perform his compositions for chamber orchestra and jazz ensembles.  More...

Violinist-composer Dan Flanagan (danflanaganviolin.com) performs The Bow and the Brush: an evening of 20 solo violin compositions, accompanied by projections of visual art from Flanagan’s personal collection. With music directly inspired by paintings, pastels, mixed media, and sculptures, the program highlights pieces by Raffaëlli, Guillaumin, Pinchon, and living artists including Paul Gibson, Nikki Vismara, and Elaine Pratt. The concert serves as a CD release party for Flanagan’s upcoming solo album, The Bow and the Brush, slated for release on MSR Classics, with visual video accompaniment of the art to be uploaded to YouTube. All of the musical works are Berkeley premieres; Works by Stephenson and Mecionis will be West Coast Premieres; and works by Neville, Weston and Flanagan (“Timeless”) will be World Premieres.  More...

The monthly series of improvisation research at Temescal Arts Center continues. Bring your instrument or come to listen. No advance notice needed — just show up. Small groups will be randomly assembled from submitted names immediately before each group plays. We try to keep transition time between groups at a minimum. Over by 10pm. Donations for the venue rental are encouraged.  More...
