Join Meridian Music: Composers in Performance as we kick of the holiday season at Canessa Gallery with a special performance of Hanukkah Music by the Book of J! Fervor, faith and action! Book of J is where old-time religion meets radical politics: songs that started life in Black and White religious communities and were later adopted by organizers for racial, economic and social justice. In the tradition of the Hebrew prophets, the songs ask for devotion and righteousness and offer power beyond what one still small voice can effect. Expect angels and demons, workers and bosses, hard times resolved and destiny fulfilled. Also singing along is good. For this show we will also do some Khanukah songs. Book of J is Jewlia Eisenberg (Charming Hostess) and Jeremiah Lockwood (Sway Machinery).  More...

Felt Has Feelings:
an interactive installation of autonomous sonic inventions
by Bryan Day
Bryan Day is a improviser, instrument inventor, illustrator and installation artist based in Richmond, CA. His work involves combining elements of the natural and man-made world using field recordings, custom audio generation software and homemade instruments. Dayís work explores the parallels between the patterns and systems in nature to those in contemporary society.

“For 'Felt Has Feelings' I will be presenting a collection of invented instruments spanning the last 15 years. These run from the oldest piece displayed, a metal-contact controlled synthesizer, featuring three separate square wave oscillators, to ultra-portable frame instruments, to interactive sound quilts.  My newest pieces in this show are semi-autonomous stringed and friction instrument.  Pitches are controlled by electromagnets and the percussive manipulations of filaments controlled by microcontroller.  Cameras process nearby movement and translate it into physical sound.”  More...

Jen Shyu’s solo performance — that of a woman living simultaneously in multiple cultures and "projecting her ancestry" through contemporary monologue — reveals a personal journey of loss and redemption made universal through the exploration of losses that plagues our modern world: loss of tradition, habitat, and public spaces. Sonic, visual, and visceral rites and reflections are discovered by pilgrimage through Taiwan, East Timor, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea. Renowned Indonesian film and stage director Garin Nugroho (Opera Jawa, Under the Tree, Daun di Atas Bantal) directs Solo Rites: Seven Breaths, infusing his distinctive vision for celebrating the exhilarating and sacred into the work.  More...
