Serving the San Francisco Bay Area New Music Community

Jim Ryan
Saxophones, flute, spoken word
The Bay Area New Music community mourns the loss of Jim Ryan. He passed on December 27, 2023.

----------------------------------

". . . Forceful, immediate, inventive." Signal to Noise

Jim Ryan was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from the University of
Minnesota in philosophy. Began listening to bebop at about age 15 and took up
the trombone but was forced to abandon it about a year later when his parents sent
him to work in an electrode factory in North Carolina. Nearing his mid-30's and living in Paris, France he picked up the flute in about '68 and shortly thereafter acquired a c-melody sax. In the early 70's he participated in a year-long workshop organized and led by Steve Lacy.

Jim formed the "Free Music Formation" about this time, and played in Paris and
other European cities. He returned to the States in 1975 and settled in Washington, D.C. where he formed the Art Performance Group in 1979.

In 1987 he moved California and lived in Marin County until 1993 when he moved to
Oakland and hooked up with the Bay Area Improv Scene. In 1997 he launched his
own group "Forward Energy" which has been performing regularly since then. Jim has also participated in Marco Eneidi's "American Jungle Orchestra," and Eddie Gale's "Orchestra for World Peace."

In the Spring of 2000, he founded the Electro/Acoustic Sextet of Oakland which was a melding of free jazz and 'avant' academic styles. The group performed in Oakland and at the Big Sur Experimental Music Festival in May, 2000. In the Spring of 2000 he performed in the 401 Festival at Theatre Artaud in composer Matthew Burtner's piece for nine tenor saxophones, "Portals of Distortion." In early 2001 formed: THE LEFT COAST IMPROV GROUP (see this title under 'Artists' on this site). In late 2002 Jim formed a third group SUBJECTS OF DESIRE which adds vocals and texts (written by Jim) to an avant improv approach. This ensemble has been through two incarnations and is about to embarck upon its third. They will appear on May 12th in the Art Performance Lab series at the 1510 Performance Space in West Oakland (see Bay Improviser 'Calendar.'

Trumpeter Eddie Gale, San Jose based veteran ‘free jazz’ master (Cecil Taylor’s Unit Structures, Sun Ra’s Arkestra), brings a large group into the Store for two sets of music in the jazz tradition from classic to way outside. Eddie Gale is a world citizen and worker for world peace. ‘Jazz Ambassador’ to the city of San Jose, his music is accessible, as well as experimentally advanced. 8PM - TREYJAZZ + WIRES

Treyjazz = Jim Ryan reeds & words, Damon Smith contrabass, Peter Valsamis percussion

Wires = Scott R. Looney keys & electronics, Matthew Burnter midi sax

The first set (above) will be a uniting of jazz trio and electronic sounds and textures triggered by Looney's keys and Burnter's midi-sax respectively. Jim's Forward Energy has been playing the experimental venues around the bay for the past couple of years and he's recently been working with trumpeter Eddie Gale. Jim has two CDs available: "Forward Energy @ The Yellow Room" 1997 & "Triptych" 19999. Damon Smith is a constant force on the scene, and Peter Valsamis from Montreal, has been living in Oakland
for several years, playing all types of gigs from Trance to Avante Guarde.

He recently received his M.A. in music from Mills College. He works in electronic as well as acoustic percussion. His duo CD with pianist Dana Reason "Border Crossings" on the Red Toucan label was released in 1997.

Scott Looney, a graduate of Cal Arts, has total grasp of composition and electronic media, as well as heavy free-jazz chops. Matthew Burtner is a young composer at Stanford who likes to trigger his electronic brainstorms via midi-sax . . . on which he too, has serious chops . . . ie. split tones, multi-phonics, and circular breathing . . . he likes to recreate the glacial landscapes of his Alaskan childhood in sound. His CD "Portals of Distortion" was issued in 1999 on innova by the American Composers Forum.

Jim Ryan, longtime improvising conspirator and stalwart of the local jazz/improv scene, slaps together yet another all-star version of his Forward Energy free jazz collective, this time with very special guest EDDIE GALE! The legendary Eddie Gale has played with the legendary jazz likes of Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, and, arguably Miles's most famous (and infamous) sideman, John Coltrane. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Eddie has been living in San Jose for the past 20+ years, and has been active in the Bay Area scene as well.

Also, jazz aficionado and action painter Victoria Brill will be painting live during the performance. What's she gonna paint? Only one way to find out...

"Jim Ryan's 'Forward Energy' makes good on its name by sustaining a compelling momentum while tearing through the boundaries commonly constraining mainstream jazz ensembles."

Bob Marsh - cello/violin
Scott R. Looney - electronics

In the spirit of Bay Area artistic experimentation and exploration, THE LEFT COAST IMPROV GROUP has crystallized from divergent musical and geographical backgrounds to form a unit of unprecedented talent. The emphasis of the group's approach is on relaxation, freedom, and listening, rather than individual virtuosity which, nevertheless, underlies the ensemble as an unfailing support for its cohesive expressiveness. It's members are products of deep dedication, long study (both in and outside of academia), and many years of performance experience. "The Left Coast Improv Group creates boldly cut, yet delightfully subtle, gems of spontaneous sound."

Rent Romus-saxes
Their rare recording thought to be lost, was presented live from the Hotel Utah in San Francisco. The group was specifically formed for this performance presented by the late great Dark Circle Lounge Series in the mid ninties. Now the band has reformed and is armed and dangerous with their first release, Out of Town, mixing free form noise, jazz, and grunge funk beats.

In the spirit of Bay Area artistic experimentation and exploration, THE LEFT COAST IMPROV GROUP (TLCIG) has crystalized from divergent musical and geographical backgrounds to form a unit of unprecedented talent. It's members are products of deep dedication, long study (both in and outside of academia), and many years of performance experience.

The emphasis of the group's approach is on relaxation, freedom, and listening, rather than individual virtuosity which, nevertheless, underlies the ensemble as an unfailing support for its cohesive expressiveness.

"TLCIG creates boldly cut, yet delightfully subtle, gems of spontaneous musical composition."
-- Saftig Himlichbaden: UberKritik von Outgrabe

Retro Blue
With his new band, Retro Blue, Jim Ryan creates a fresh look at the blues, R&B, and the folk ballad with original compositions in these styles. His saxophone, vocals, and lyrics pay homage to the venerable tradition and take it out into experimental areas where humor, emotion, and improvisation forge a gripping dialogue with the future. He’ll play and sing 'Run From Baby Blues', 'The Death of the Sun', 'Bullshittin' Charlie', as well as hitting his instrumental pieces such as 'Jimmy’s Jump' and 'How Are You?' And 'free style spontaneous compositions' are always on tap. Contrabassist Esten Lindgren will play with Jim on these.
